New grant funding expected to impact the plumbing and HVAC industries. Canada announced the launch of the $2.6 billion Green Homes Canada grant program on May 28.
"Whether it's replacing a leaky window, insulating, or upgrading before the harsh Canadian winter, today's investment will help Canadians make their homes more comfortable and their lives more affordable. Improving the energy efficiency of our homes not only reduces pollution, but also creates new jobs, economic growth and a cleaner future for all. The new program will provide Canadians with grants of up to $5,000 to pay for energy-saving home improvements, as well as $600 for an EnerGuide assessment - for a total of $5,600 in potential grants per household. The program was first announced in November 2020 as part of Canada's fall economic statement."
"Green Homes Canada's grant is a positive step for Canadian homeowners, but more needs to be done to promote retrofitting of non-residential buildings in Canada to maximize the impact of retrofitting on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, stimulating our economy and putting Canadians back to work."
TApplications for the program begin with an energy assessment conducted by a certified consultant. The consultant then visits the applicant's home to determine which energy-saving measures are eligible for reimbursement. If the homeowner decides to proceed, he or she hires a licensed contractor to carry out the upgrades. Once the work is verified, the homeowner will be reimbursed.
